BREAKING NEWS

Chris Daniels Hospitalized

RARWRITER.com isn't typically a "Breaking News" type of media outlet, but in the course of announcing this SXSW-focused March edition we have learned that Chris Daniels - shown above with the late Marvin Graves (“Henchi”) and Freddi Gowdy of the great “Freddi-Henchi Band” - is undergoing chemo-therapy in a Houston, Texas hospital. He, according to a Colorado source, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. Chris Daniels is a member of the music elite. As leader of Chris Daniels & the Kings, he has released a dozen CDs over a 20-plus year run. He and the Kings tour Europe annually, last year recording an album overseas (We'll Meet Again) with the Dutch band The Blues Masters. Chris is also an Assistant Professor in the music department of the University of Colorado-Denver. He is a long-time friend of RARWRITER.com and has contributed significantly to this site as a source of information on the Colorado music community, and through his writing on artist management, his primary subject in his work at CU. We at RARWRITER.com send our best to Chris and his family and we will provide updates on his condition and these become available. - RAR

ECONOMIC NEWS:

The Silver Lining - Shark Attacks Are Down!

The University of Florida "Shark File" project reports that these are difficult times for man eating sharks, whose favorite meal has grown less available as average people have lost the means to visit the beach. There were only 29 feasts in 2009, down from 41 the previous year. Most of these happen in Florida, where waders tend to move like old people, thereby sending "prey in distress" signals to the feeders, and to glow a phosphorescent white beneath the waves. Things, however, are expected to improve with the approach of spring and summer, and the inevitable upturn in societal wealth as the bankers open their purses and share their accumulated wealth, though the RARWRITER.com Shark File threw that last part in their just to give hope our poor, swimming friends.

Nathan East - In the Studio

L.A. musician Gary Swan brings our attention to Nathan East - In The Studio, a short documentary currently available on YouTube.com at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfxYjQ9ZuSU . East, whose studio credits include Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Babyface, Billy Preston and David Foster, has quite a line of instructional books on the bass and other aspects of the business. In this video, he takes you into the studio and behind the scenes to learn and see first-hand what it takes to be a professional musician. It is a useful thing for any aspiring studio player to watch, particularly regarding "studio chemistry", i.e., the ability of producers to match players of like personalities for the purpose of finding the nuanced groove. The players in this video are exceptional in their perfect discipline and sensitivity to the whole.

Kevin Mahogany Debuts New Vocalist Jeff Hall

The week of February 22, 2010 marked the debut of the Mahogany Digital imprint, the newest label in Kevin Mahogany's "Mahogany Jazz" family. Vocalist Jeff Hall, Kevin Mahogany's protégé, is the first release to radio with the two singles: "Cadillac Club" and "Detour Ahead."

Discovered by Kevin Mahogany, Jeff Hall (pic left) has the vocal prowess reminiscent of jazz legend Mark Murphy. Hall brings a new urgency and street sense to traditional jazz, as evidenced by his vocal presentation and his onstage appearance. Hall defines a new direction for vocal jazz.

"When I heard Jeff, there was a quality in his voice there was a uniqueness to his sound," Mahogany said with regard to his decision to introduce Jeff to the public. As a lyricist himself, Mahogany recognized Hall's outstanding talent and assigned him the task of writing the lyrics to "Cadillac Club."

Jeff Hall's "Cadillac Club" and "Detour Ahead" singles will be the first singles to launch the new Mahogany Digital label. Don't miss your chance to feature one of the hottest rising stars on the touring circuit today.

All Jeff Hall singles will be available through various online retailers like iTunes, Amazon.mp3 and Rhapsody.

Sample and purchase the music: www.reverbnation.com/jeffhall. Sales on Amazon begin March 8, 2010.

More about Mahogany Digital:
Mahogany Digital is a progressive label that seeks to embrace the digital age, while remaining true to our musical roots. As the consumer becomes more electronically oriented, we believe that the future of music will be in individual single releases, rather than full CDs. More info: www.mahoganydigital.com  Mahogany Digital will service physical CDs of singles to radio but will only offer retail sales of the singles via online retailers like iTunes, Amazon.mp3 and Rhapsody.

PRESS RELEASES - (click here to read the following)

In studio news, of the independent variety, Angie Mattson reports that she is finishing a follow up to her appealingly titled CD Given to Sudden Panic and Noisy Retreat. "... I finally finished recording my new album. I am heading to Phoenix for mastering  next week, and am planning on a June release date. I had many wonderful musicians join me on this project, and we've created something adventurous and unique. I am excited to share it with you." Angie has been playing in a duo with Jeff Mendel (see the Bohemians section below) as well as bass for the Indie Rock unit Sabrosa Purr.

Nikki Ferrari has been visible only to Slovenian residents of Ljubljana since leaving his native U.S. a couple years ago to build a new life with his new wife, Portugal-born Spanish pop princess Wiwiana Patricia Rodrigues.  On her MySpace site she describes her life in a pleasingly fractured English that, for older readers, will bring to mind the young Charo - "I am born in Portugal when I will child I live in Puerto Rico then my daddy move to California. Know I live in Europe, Slovenia. I am sweet to my friends, relatives and my husband Nikki Ferrari, understanding person, kind, adorable, cute, concerned to the future of the world, to my family and most of all to my self."

Mr. adorable-cute-and-concerned recently sent to RARWRITER.com a sample of the work he is doing in the recording facility he has built in Ljubljana. "My wife had me run off a quick example from the studio..." writes Nikki. (Anybody who saw Amadeus knows it is always the wife's fault.) "This is what I am currently working up at the moment and is only a throw-out mix and certainly not the best of my tracks but hope it gives you an idea of what I am aiming for... maybe something along the scale of Rihanna"s 'Umbrella'."

It is unclear what the track supplied has in common with Rihanna's Casio-keyboard inspired pop. Nikki seems to the ears of RARWRITER.com to be more committed to arena-sized orchestral rock.

In the section below are other press releases from recent weeks selected for their particular relevance to our readers.
